Winter Solstice

Today is the winter solstice and the first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. It's all due to Earth's tilt, which ensures that the shortest day of every year falls around December 21.

In honour of this I thought I should share some Winter Solstice traditions:

In pagan Scandinavia the winter festival was the yule (or juul). Great yule logs were burned, and people drank mead around the bonfires listening to minstrel-poets singing ancient legends. It was believed that the yule log had the magical effect of helping the sun to shine more brightly.

Mistletoe, which was sacred because it mysteriously grew on the most sacred tree, the oak, was ceremoniously cut and a spray given to each family, to be hung in the doorways as good luck. The Celtic Druids also regarded mistletoe as sacred. Druid priests cut it from the tree on which it grew with a golden sickle and handed it to the people, calling it All-Heal. To hang it over a doorway or in a room was to offer goodwill to visitors. Kissing under the mistletoe was a pledge of friendship. Mistletoe is still forbidden in most Christian churches because of its Pagan associations, but it has continued to have a special place in home celebrations.

DIY Party Dress Kit

What a brilliant idea! I would love to colour my own dress:)

The 'Colour-In' Dress is available for 238 Euro. Textile markers included

From Berber Soepboer's website: "The Colour-In Dress' is a simple dress with a black and white print, which is especially designed to fill with coloured textile markers. Because the print is so flexible you can make many different designs by colouring it. Everybody can interpret the print the way they like it best."

DYI Beauty Tips for Winter Skin

I love finding DYI beauty tips to share with my lovely readers. Since the weather outside is frightful I have been spending more time than I have wanted inside-so why not pamper my winter skin. Here are a few fun things I have been trying lately...

Egg White Facial Mask

Pore-minimizing recipe.

1. Whip egg whites into a foam
2. Apply a thin layer to your face with your fingers
3. Let dry
4. After 10 to 15 minutes you will feel the egg firm on your skin-it’s time to rinse it off!

Vaseline Eyeshadow

Dab a tiny bit in the center of each lid and spread it around, you will be shocked at how great it looks! And the Vaseline is moisturising for your eyes!

Heated Moisturizer

When I got out of the shower the other day and put on my festive Cranberry Body Butter it was warm and runny. I left it on the top of the TV in my bedroom by mistake overnight, but it was a lovely mistake! You could mimic this by putting your moisturizer on on top of your radiator or heating vent before you get in the shower so it’s warmed up when you rub it on. Just be careful because it will be a bit runnier than usual.

What are your favourite DYI winter skin tips?

Christmas in Paris

One year not too long ago I was fortunate enough to spend Christmas in Paris with a good friend of mine Tracey(who is lucky enough to spend Christmas this year in Egypt!). We went skating in the Eiffel Tower Christmas eve then to an English service at Notre Dame Cathedral. For Christmas we spent the day at Euro Disney which was an exciting experience. Here are some photos we took...

You've gotta keep it epilated

I haven't shaved my legs in over ten years! Whenever I tell someone that they look at me funny but I have been waxing, and for the last four years using an epilator. I was first introduced to epliating when I was in living in London and my roommate loved it. I gave it a try and have been hooked ever since. It does hurt a bit in the beginning and it isn't for everyone but I think everyone should at least give it a try!

I found this article on the advantages of epilators over waxing...

Epilator vs waxing: advantages of epilators over waxing?

Many a times, waxing breaks the hair and doesn’t take them out from the root. When you are removing hair from epilator it will always take the hair out from the root because it is not hands working behind epilators, it is uniquely designed machinery that is made specifically to pull hair from the roots.

With an epilator hair can be removed without creating a mess in the room or in the washroom. All you need is the machine then you can get rid of the hair anyplace and anytime.

Convenience is the major advantage of epilators, you can carry them anywhere. If you are going on a trip for a long time in a foreign country where you believe you won’t be able to find a salon you can take your epilator along to keep your skin clean and shiny.

The more you will use epilator the less painful it will become and lesser will be your hair growth. Its results are way better than waxing; you become hair free for at least a month.

Give it a try you might just like it!

Why don't you...

Right now I am addicted to...

I quite enjoy wearing black lace tights with my dresses. It adds a little kick to outfits during the cold weather when we could all enjoy a little fun:)

Before we go to sleep every night my Toy Friend and I watch an episode Planet Earth. I love watching the animals in their natural habitats and the penguins are so so so cute!

I somehow got the 1st season of True Blood on DVD at the library by chance one day and I have been addicted ever since! I am now watching season 2 which is even better than the first one. Which is odd for me because I am not a big Vampire person, I don't watch or read any other Vampire shows or books but for some reason I find True Blood clever and funny. Also, Vampire Bill is kinda cute;)

Smoky Eyes

I love the smoky eye look but am not so great at applying eyeshadow, so when I saw the Smoky Eye quads from Maybelline's new ExpertWear Stylish Smokes Eyeshadow collection I had to give them a try. There are four steps which are hard to mess up-even for me. I bought the Charcoal Smokes for a dramatic night look, but it comes in many different colours to choose from. I have got heaps of complements on how great it looks!

Tip: I read somewhere that if you line your top eyelid with black you should line the bottom with dark brown it will make your eyes look much bigger then lining them both with black which actually makes them look smaller.

It's fool proof eyeshadow for the holiday season:)

Hair

I just finished watching Vicky Christina Barcelona (which I LOVE) and I want her hair so very badly!

I will be taking heaps of pictures tomorrow but here are some holiday photos that helped get me in the Christmas mood today:)

Why do fools fall in love?

"But if we are all so smart. why does life seem so crazy? People smoke and gamble. Fools fall in love. Offices are run by morons. City neighbourhoods boom or collapse for no apparent reason. Where is the logic in all this?"
