Road Trip Part 8: Minneapolis

What an awesome city! We were surprised at how eco-friendly it was... there were even dirt roads in the middle of the city as well as rent a bikes everywhere! The coolest thing about this city was the people peddling around a beer cart (above) while drinking...

Victoria's Secret

Love, love, love, and love!!! I would love to add these to my holiday dress collection;)

Love actually is all around...

“Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around.”

Bikram vs Moksha Yoga

So some of you are probably wondering what I actually did all summer?!?! I had the opportunity to experience quite a few things on my road trip:) One of the most awesome things that I got to do was 8days of Moksha Hot Yoga followed by 8days of Bikrim Hot yoga!!! Something that was super exciting for me!!! I have always wondered which one I would like more, or which one I would find most challenging... Starting off with the Moksha because that is what I have been doing for the past 2years and I was most comfortable with and then moving on to Bikram which to me was soooooooooooo hard when I tried it in NYC last summer- it actually kicked my ass!!! HARD!!!

Moshka yoga according to their website:

Moksha Yoga is a form of hot yoga that is ideal for the yoga beginner as well as the seasoned practitioner. Every Moksha Yoga class takes you through a series of strengthening and toning postures in the detoxifying calm of a heated studio. The Moksha Yoga series was designed to free areas of the body that are often habitually tight and constricted - lower back, hips, knees, shoulders and neck. In this process the body is strengthened, toned, and opened, while the mind becomes still. Space is created within so that each student moves towards the full potential in their life.

Bikram yoga according to their website:
Bikram Yoga is the 26 postures Sequence selected and developed by Bikram Choudhury from Hatha Yoga. It has been proved and experienced by millions that these 26 postures systematically work every part of the body, to give all the internal organs, all the veins, all the ligaments, and all the muscles everything they need to maintain optimum health and maximum function. Each component takes care of something different in the body, and yet they all work together synergistically, contributing to the success of every other one, and extending its benefits.
There are definitely pros and cons to each form of yoga. The first week of Moshka for me was quite difficult seeing as all I did the month before was sit in a car and drive across the country. I found the Moshka much more relaxing. The poses are just as difficult but the teachers want you to listen to your body and go at your own pace. The poses are not in the same order everyday as with Bikram so you can't get lost in the meditation of the class as easily but he teachers at Moshka speak in a more relaxing tone that sets a much more relaxed and meditative class. At the studio I went to in Edmonton one of the teachers actually gave me a foot massage while I was in Child's Pose which was quite nice:)

Bikram I found to be much more demanding. The goal of Bikram is that the classes are exactly the same no matter where you take them in the world, so the teachers say the same things and guide you through each class in the same sequence of poses every time. At this point in my yoga practice I quite enjoyed this. It really was a practice in meditation for me as I was always inside my body doing yoga. Also, everyday I learned a new yoga lesson about yoga and life, I wrote a few in my journal from my time at the West Edmonton Studio:
-Your body is capable of amazing things if you don't listen to your mind, get out of your mind-everything is ok
-You don't have to look for unconditional love you already have it within yourself.
I have one for everyday of my 8 days there. Something else that I found quite interesting about the West Edmonton Studio which I guess is not like the rest is that all the women shower together... which I have to tell you was quite an experience for me as I have never done that before. The first day I went into the shower with all my yoga gear on... then the next day I took my clothes off as soon as I got in-then I realized how insane it all was and just took my clothes off and went in the shower...
I really enjoy both forms of Hot Yoga and I realize that at different times in my life I enjoy different types of yoga depending on what my mind and body needs at that time. Sadly there is no Bikram yoga where I live but there is a Moshka studio about an hour and a half away that I get to go to once or twice a month:)

OMG

Ok so who was the genius that came up with this idea?!? I am in love whoever that might be...

What I am reading right now...

So I started my Yoga Teacher Training reading list!!! This is my first book of many more to come:) It is a great read about using the Yoga Sutra and Bhagavad Gitato steer your course in yoga and life. There are many off the mat practices to guide your relationships with yourself, your family and friends:)

I just started reading this novel two days ago but so far it has been really great! Set in Nazi Germany, the book is narrated, quite poetically, by Death, who relates the story of a girl, Liesel Meminger, and her foster family and neighbors on Himmel Street, a poor neighborhood in a town outside of Munich.

Ok so I know that Cosmo isn't the most scholarly of magazines to be reading-but I love the brain candy inside! I will do a blog post of the Juicy bits later this month;)

nothing wrong with you

As different as we all are, there’s one thing most young women have in common: we’re all brought up to feel like there’s something wrong with us. We’re too fat. We’re dumb. We’re too smart. We’re not ladylike enough—stop cursing, chewing with your mouth open, speaking your mind. We’re too slutty. We’re not slutty enough. Fuck that. You’re not too fat. You’re not too loud. You’re not too smart. You’re not unladylike. There is nothing wrong with you."

grow up

I’ve heard that it’s possible to grow up - I’ve just never met anyone who’s actually done it. Without parents to defy, we break the rules we make for ourselves. We throw tantrums when things don’t go our way, we whisper secrets with our best friends in the dark, we look for comfort where we can find it, and we hope - against all logic, against all experience. Like children, we never give up hope."
Meredith Grey
